The Day I Stopped Wearing Black
(all the time)
This morning Ray asked to paint. I set her up with some water colors and three different paint brushes. Usually she loves to use all the colors, especially green and red, but today she did something very different. She went straight for the black paint. I was immediately disappointed because I knew the painting wouldn’t turn out with the same vibrant colors that I love to see and that the water was mucked up right away. She continued to go for the black paint, completely ignoring my pleas to try another color. After a few minutes, she said she was done and handed me her painting. I said thank you, but I was honestly thinking “no point in saving this one for the binder” and immediately planned to throw it out at nap time.
I put it back on the table and she pointed to it and said “Mom”. She started repeating it in her usual way and began to get a little upset. For those of you know don’t know her well, she will repeat something over and over again until you repeat it back with understanding. She pointed to me and said “mama, black, black mama” and it hit me that I was wearing all black, my usual “mom uniform” of black yoga pants and tee. Did my daughter just make a painting of me? Wow!
But when I looked at her painting of me it made me sad to think that this is how she sees me – a big black thing. In that moment, I realized that my 2 year old has very rarely sees me anything but black (or something dark) since the day she was born. I want her memories of me to be filled with bright colors, not this depressing shade of nothingness! I never thought about how the color of my clothing would affect her memory of me. I considered other things like displaying modestly and self-respect by covering up, but never thought much about the color of my day-to-day “bumming around the house” attire.
When your child thinks about you, what colors will they see? Are you as guilty as me for wearing the same old black gear? Today was a life-changing moment. I don’t have the money to just go out and buy a bunch of brightly colored items today, but when I am getting dress in the morning, I am going to make sure I am wearing my very few colored tops before reaching for the black tees. When I get around to doing some shopping, I am going to ignore the dark stuff and aim to add some color to my closet.
